Next-gen 3D wind sensing by Multi-Path ultrasonic anemometers

Next-gen 3D wind sensing by Multi-Path ultrasonic anemometers

The uSonic-3 MP ultrasonic anemometer sets a new standard in 3D wind and turbulence measurement. Based on METEK’s proven uSonic-3 ultrasonic sensor family, the Multi-Path concept allows that a single pulse transmitted by one transducer is received quasi-simultaneously by all three adjacent transducers of the opposite array.

The independent measurements of the air flow along all 3 x 3 measuring paths of one sensor head yield in total 3 x 3 = 9 radial winds. This redundancy enables an automatic selection of the most advantageous triple of radial winds in terms of minimum flow distortion, including one directly measured vertical wind component.

All measurements of radial paths undergo quality control, with a comprehensive status report provided. The embedded electronics with internal data logger and an Ethernet port as a standard allow for convenient stand-alone measurements. Two sensor head variants enable best measurements for different applications: the uSonic-3 Cage MP for omni-directional flow on top of masts and the uSonic-3 Class A MP for directional flow on booms.

The Multi-Path technology and stand-alone capability in combination with extremely low maintenance and reliable operation in all weather conditions have made METEK’s uSonic-3 MP ultrasonic anemometers the next-gen 3D wind and turbulence sensors.
