Vaisala acquires 100% of Leosphere’s shares to strengthen position in remote atmospheric measurement

Vaisala, a global leader in environmental and industrial measurement, has agreed to acquire all the shares in Leopshere SAS that specializes in developing, manufacturing and servicing turnkey wind lidar (light detection and ranging) instruments for wind energy, aviation, meteorology, and air quality.

This acquisition is a natural extension of Vaisala’s Weather and Environment business area’s strategy to drive industry leadership and growth through strengthening its position as a global leader in remote wind sensing technologies. In addition, Vaisala obtains atmospheric lidar technology with leading measurement accuracy. Together, Vaisala and Leosphere will be able to develop their activities in the wind energy market as well as in the aviation weather market where lidar technology improves the safety and productivity of runways during take-off and landing.

“By integrating into the Vaisala Group, Leosphere gains the scale to strengthen and perpetuate its position as an industrial supplier of efficient lidar solutions; a technology now recognized as strategic by the measurement sector,” said Alexandre Sauvage, CEO of Leosphere.

“Leosphere and Vaisala have already worked together for several years in the airport field due to the complementary nature of their technologies. The complementarity of the expertise and portfolios of our two companies represents the major strength of this acquisition. This allows the creation of an offer portfolio that we think will meet the expectations of customers in the fields of wind energy, meteorology, air traffic management and air quality. In addition, both Leosphere and Vaisala have research and development as central to their corporate DNA,” Sauvage continued.

“Leosphere fits perfectly in Vaisala by complementing Weather and Environment business area’s offering in remote wind sensing with its high-end ground-based and turbine-mounted wind lidars. In wind power market, these instruments complement sodars (sonic detection and ranging), which Vaisala already has in its offering. Leosphere’s team brings deep laser and optical remote sensing competences to Vaisala’s team. Leosphere is a global technology leader in its area and has a high R&D focus, just like Vaisala. We are very excited and happy to welcome Leosphere employees to join Vaisala”, says Jarkko Sairanen, Executive Vice President, Weather and Environment, Vaisala.

This operation will have no impact on the management structure of Leosphere or on its 135 employees.
