Beyond the Boundary Layer: Meteodrone Strato and the Case for Data-as-a-Service

06 Oct 2026
Exhibitor Showcase Theatre

Meteomatics introduces Meteodrone Strato for the first time at Met Tech Expo, extending atmospheric profiling to 10,000m ASL and reaching WxUAS beyond the boundary layer into the stratosphere for the first time. This session outlines two years of operational evidence from Switzerland's DETAF 2.0 programme, where an unattended Meteodrone network flew 1,720 automated profiles across 10 sites in six months, meeting the WMO's highest OSCAR accuracy tier for temperature and humidity, and measurably improving EURO1k forecast skill when the observations were assimilated, including correctly resolving low-level cloud events the model otherwise missed. It then makes the case for Data-as-a-Service: a per-profile access model that lets a national meteorological service incorporate UAS-sourced observations without operating drone hardware. This underpins a NOAA-backed 3D Mesonet programme in the United States, beginning in Oklahoma through NOAA's National Mesonet Program.
