BTD-1 Thunderstorm Warning System: early warnings for safer decisions
07 Oct 2026
Exhibitor Showcase Theatre
The new BTD-1 and its role in the continuous assessment of thunderstorm risk will be presented. The BTD-1 combines very high lightning detection efficiency with a low false alarm rate to support timely, informed decisions. In the session it will be explained how the system detects and locates all forms of lightning up to 83 km away, including small intracloud flashes that can be used to indicate dangerous storm intensification.
The presentation covers how unique pre-flash warnings, based on electrical charge detected on raindrops and in the surrounding air, can identify developing overhead activity before the first flash. Also covered will be the rugged, self-contained design, wireless communication, solar power and updated multi-display interface. Case studies will show how pre-flash warnings and storm intensification detection can be used to continually assess changing thunderstorm risk and support safer operational decisions.
