Thermometer screens protect sensors from sun, rain, and snow, but naturally ventilated designs can still bias readings. Adiabatic forced-convection screens with umbrellas were field-tested against conventional screens. Natural screens showed large warm biases in summer sun and clear deviations in rain and snow, highlighting the advantage of umbrellas for more accurate surface air temperature.
