Continuous precipitation monitoring began at Syowa Station in February 2025 using a compact X-band solid-state dual-polarization radar. Designed to operate at temperatures down to –40°C, the system avoids contamination from blowing snow and has operated continuously and reliably with minimal maintenance. Radar estimates agreed well with ground instruments in the absence of blowing snow and indicated annual precipitation of approximately 200 mm. Long-term monitoring will help assess precipitation variability and trends affecting Antarctic ice-sheet mass balance.
