Severe convective weather requires early detection of developing thunderstorms before overhead lightning begins. This presentation describes a standalone, ground-based sensor that detects both thunderstorm electrification and weak intracloud lightning, enabling earlier identification of hazardous Cumulonimbus development and intensification. Suitable for remote locations and areas without radar coverage, the system complements existing lightning detection networks by providing high-sensitivity local monitoring and extended warning lead times for severe convective hazards.
