Non-Contact Hydrometry in Extreme Environments: A Comparative Study of Lidar and Radar Sensors

05 Oct 2026
Developments in Earth System Measurements and Technologies
Emerging measurement technologies and integrated observing approaches

Traditional staff-gauge measurements often become unsafe or unreliable during extreme high-flow events. This session evaluates two non-contact stage-measurement techniques, LiDAR and Radar, deployed on a high-gradient river in the Indian Himalayas. Benchmarked against baseline authority records, both sensors show high accuracy and reliability, supported by a comprehensive uncertainty assessment. The findings support wider adoption of non-contact hydrometric methods for continuous, high-resolution monitoring in complex, flood-prone mountainous catchments.
