Non-catching precipitation instruments (NCIs) measure precipitation without collecting hydrometeors, distinguishing them from traditional collecting-type instruments. NCIs are being increasingly deployed operationally as they typically require less maintenance and generally provide more information than traditional precipitation gauges. The WMO Solid Precipitation Intercomparison Experiment (SPICE) Final Report (WMO IOM Report No. 131) recommended that further work be conducted to better understand and characterize these instruments and their various output parameters.
