Andrea Merlone is Research Manager at the Italian National Research Institute of Metrology (INRiM) and associate researcher at the Polar Science Institute He is chair of the Working Group Environment of the CCT at BIPM and chair of the Expert Team “Measurements Uncertainties” of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). He also serves as Chair of the “Science and Research group” of the GCOS and co-Chair of the Task Group “Air Temperature” of BIPM. He is chair of the COST Action “CRIM” – Climate Reference Instruments and Measurements. He launched the EU project MeteoMet, bringing a unique contribution in delivering metrology to the metrology community and climate science. From MeteoMet, several other projects follows under his chairmanship, extending the metrology approach to different areas of meteorology and climate. His recent activities ranged from the accurate measurements of phase transitions thermodynamics, to the determinations of the Boltzmann’s constant for the new definition of the kelvin, to a new metrological approach for the traceability of meteorological observations and climate studies. He promoted and organizes the series of international conferences “Metrology for Meteorology and Climate and organizes the “Arctic Metrology Workshop” series. He published more than 150 papers, receiving around 1400 citations.
