Leonid Nichman
Senior Research Officer,
National Research Council Canada
Dr. Leonid Nichman is a Senior Research Officer at the Flight Research Laboratory of the National Research Council Canada (NRC) and an Adjunct Professor at Carleton University. He leads the Environmental Science focus area within NRC’s Aerospace Research Centre, supporting airborne environmental research and technology development initiatives. Over the past eight years at NRC, Dr. Nichman has participated in and led numerous airborne research campaigns focused on severe weather, cloud microphysics, climate, air quality, and aviation-related atmospheric processes.
Dr. Nichman completed his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science at the University of Manchester, UK, in 2017, specializing in cloud microphysics and atmospheric sampling techniques. His expertise spans laboratory, field, and airborne measurements of gases, aerosols, clouds, and precipitation, with a particular focus on atmospheric characterization and the performance of airborne measurement systems.
His current research examines the impacts of weather on aviation and the impacts of aviation on climate, including aircraft icing, contrails, atmospheric electrification, cloud characterization, and the development and evaluation of advanced airborne instrumentation. He is actively involved in improving the reliability, calibration, and operational performance of airborne optical probes used in atmospheric research, supporting high-quality measurements in challenging flight environments.
