Sumit Sen
Professor & Head, Department of Hydrology, Director, WMO RA-II RTC (Hydrology), India,
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee
Prof. Sumit Sen is Professor and Head of the Department of Hydrology at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee), India, which also serves as a WMO Regional Training Centre (RTC) component for Regional Association II (Asia). He holds a Ph.D. in Civil (Biosystems) Engineering from Auburn University, USA, and brings more than 15 years of experience in operational hydrology, hydrometric innovation, and international capacity building. His research spans Himalayan hydrology, water security, springshed management, and non-contact hydrometry, with particular focus on low-cost sensing technologies for mountainous and data-scarce regions. He is a member of the WMO HydroHub Think Tank and has served as Principal Investigator of the WMO HydroHub Innovation Project on LiDAR-based non-contact water-level monitoring for high-gradient rivers. He has contributed to revising the WMO Basic Instruction Package for Hydrologists (BIP-H/BIP-HT) and led WMO-supported hydrology training for Myanmar's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. Prof. Sen has supervised nine Ph.D. theses, published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers, and holds an Indian patent for a moving-storm rainfall simulator. He serves on several national committees, including the Ministry of Jal Shakti Steering Committee on Springshed Mapping and the NDMA Technical Advisory Committee.
